Migraines can be debilitating. Migraine symptoms usually are more severe than headaches and cause symptoms such as photophobia, flashing lights, visual changes, nausea, vomiting and fatigue.

What is a Migraine?

Migraines usually present as a one-sided pulsating headache which typically present initially with an "aura". The aura indicates the first sign of a migraine, at which point symptoms can become more severe including flashing lights, visual disturbances, nausea, fatigue and irritability.

What are the signs/symptoms of migraine?

Migraines are pulsatile one sided throbbing headaches and cause nausea, vomiting, light headedness.

Migraines typically last between 4-72 hours.

How are Migraines diagnosed?

Migraines are typically diagnosed by presentation and the history of a patient who may have recurrent migraines.

Neuroimaging studies are sometimes necessary, as well as laboratory studies such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein.

 

How are migraines treated?

Migraines can be treated with abortive medications NSAIDs, analgesics, Selective Serotonin receptor agonists.

Migraines can also be treated with prophylactic medications including beta-blockers, antiepileptic drugs, calcium channel blockers and Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
